National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO)

Definition

NAPEO is the trade association for the PEO industry, representing approximately 200+ PEO companies. NAPEO publishes industry research, advocates for PEO-favorable legislation, defines voluntary industry standards, and maintains educational resources for both PEOs and buyers.

For buyers, NAPEO is most useful as a research source — NAPEO publishes economic research on PEO outcomes (typically showing PEO-using businesses grow faster and have lower employee turnover than peers) and maintains a member directory that can be a starting point for PEO discovery.

NAPEO membership is not a certification or accreditation — it's trade association membership. Most established PEOs are NAPEO members; absence from the directory is more notable than presence in it.
